Rose Sunset

Pink and orange hues

This semi-abstract piece reflects the serene pink and orange hues of sunset. I sprinkled Brusho powders onto cotton muslin, spritzed with water then highlighted selected areas with Caran d’Ache Neocolor crayons. Once dry, I placed it over some repurposed wadding to give a more substantial base for hand stitching. I snaked piping cord between the layers, then echoed this line throughout, stitching intuitively and becoming completely engrossed in the calm repetition of the movements. Deciding which areas were calling for stitch, and those needing a quieter space was part of the fun, as was the choice between colourful, modern threads or the gentler tones of my vintage collection. I love the fluidity of this way of working, simply responding to the marks on the ‘page’ and letting the stitches lead the way. Creating this piece reminded me how much I enjoy the whole process of making, especially when there is no pressure to follow a preconceived idea or specific design. I find it’s the perfect way to unwind- letting the mind wander and allowing the hands to find their own happy rhythm.
