Pick a Pocket

This fun sample was made for a character from Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman as part of a project for my BA. It was made entirely from reclaimed materials for the character of Meggie McGregor. The pocket piece was rescued from my husband’s defunct gardening jacket, which I layered with rust-dyed 1970’s bedding, cotton pieces from an assortment of garments and deconstructed muslin scraps. Using simple running stitches in varying thread weights and colours is one of my favourite ways to create surface pattern as well as being a functional way to anchor the top layers to the backing fabric. I take great satisfaction in breathing new life into materials that might otherwise have been discarded or sent to landfill, giving them a new purpose and enjoying the mindful nature of the creative process.
